How to Choose a Family Friendly Fridge Freezer

When it comes to kids there are no hard and fast rules. No matter how well planned and well thought out something is they will always find a way to surprise you. This article contains guidelines of what to look for in a child friendly refrigerator - if you follow them you will find that you have more control (as much as is possible where children are involved) over how your fridge freezer is used.

Separate adult only section - If there are some things that you really do not want your children to get a hold of, installing a mini-fridge somewhere high-up can seem like the only option. This is not only expensive but for some children creating a special zone in an inaccessible place only gives them a target to aim at. If you want to differentiate products for grownups from run of the mill foodstuffs then try creating a specialised children's section in your fridge. Although counterintuitive, this can encourage an understanding of boundaries between what children can and cannot have as well as help distract them away from the dangerous but more mundanely packaged items on other shelves.

Top-mount unit - Frozen products are more vulnerable to tampering so having a top-mount fridge freezer (where the freezer is higher up) keeps them away from the shorter members of the family. While this only works when kids cannot reach the freezer it is undeniably effective while it lasts.

Fingerprint free materials- Thanks to the mysterious ability of oily fingerprints to appear with surprising frequency in the most unlikely places, many parents choose a unit with a plastic facade in order to avoid a perpetual cycle of polishing. This is generally a good idea but if you do not want to sacrifice style then there are some fingerprint free stainless steel models available which do an admirable job of keeping cleaning to a minimum.

Child-lock controls - Curiosity is a wonderful thing to see in a young mind but not if it means your freezer gets defrosted. Available on most models with a screen on the user interface, child-lockable controls stop the important settings from being changed- whether it is from being accidentally knocked or as the result of idle fidgeting.

Grab height snack shelves - If your kids are allowed to help themselves to food from the fridge then you can encourage them to snack healthily by making it easier for them to choose healthy food. Make sure that your good snacks (fruit, crudite and suchlike) are kept in the middle of the fridge and you will find that they get eaten more often than if there were out of the way in the salad crisper.
